Schicksalstag (Day of Destiny) – November 9th

November 9th is one of the most noteworthy dates in German history. Historians identify at least six important events, both celebrated and reviled:

-On this day in 1848, Robert Blum was assassinated in Vienna due to his revolutionary efforts to democratize Germany.

-In 1918, Philipp Scheidemann proclaimed the Weimar Republic.

-Hitler attemped his Bierkellerputsch (Beer Hall putsch/coup) in Munich on November 8-9, 1923.

-Two years later (1925), the infamous SS was established.

-The Nazi anti-Jewish pogrom known as the night of broken glass, or Kristallnacht, occurred on this date in 1932.

-The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989.
